Cider and Perry

Herefordshire is the home of the cider apple and perry pear and here at Butford Farm we are continuing the tradition of quality cider and perry production – the barn area adjoining our shop boasts a 300-year old cider mill.

Our Philosophy

  • We are as non-interventionist as possible and to this end we only use wild yeasts and do not add sulphites or any flavour enhancers.
  • We believe nature knows best and so we bottle condition to produce sparkling products rather than carbonate.
  • We have complete content declaration on our labels including as far as possible the actual varieties of the apples and pears which are used.
  • All our ciders and perries are made from 100% freshly pressed juice and fermented with wild yeasts.

Our Achievements

  • Numerous awards in all major cider and perry competitions – principally our local Big Apple Cider & Perry Trials (Champion Perry Maker 2011, 3rd 2014 and 2nd 2015 draught medium cider), the Royal Bath & West Show (best perry and organic cider 2009, 2nd organic cider 2015), the Herefordshire Cider Museum(best perry in 2008, 2009 and 2015), the Three Counties Show (2nd sparkling perry 2008),CAMRA National Cider & Perry Championships (2nd perry 2012, 3rd perry 2005) and Soil Association 2012 Organic Food Awards (Ganymede commended cider category).
  • Probably the only naturally produced organic bottle conditioned perry in the UK.

The 2015 Ciders and Perries

We have completed all the bottling and racking from the 2014 harvest. The main changes from 2014 were a greater number of our bottle conditioned cider, Ganymede, and the organic bottle conditioned perry, Aurora Premier Crus – the latter due to the increased crop from our own perry pear orchard.

The current range is set out below and an order form can beaccessed through the How To Buy page.
